Tips For Privacy Protection

- Check SSN earnings and benefits statements annually for fraudulent use.
- Before discarding, tear up or shred credit card and ATM receipts, bank statements, unused credit card offers, and other papers with your personal information.
- Keep track of your mail. If a statement, check, or bill is missing, someone may have changed your billing address.
- Check all credit card and bank statements for accuracy.
- Don't mail bills from you own mailbox. Drop them in a postal box, or at the Post Office.
- Review your credit report annually and correct mistakes.
- Avoid easy to figure out access and personal ID (PIN) codes.
- Make sure you do business with reputable companies, especially on the Internet.
- Use only secure sites for making on-line purchases. Secure sites begin with "https".
- Keep your borrowers padlock or key icon active when doing business online.
- Pay for online purchases by credit card to assure you get what you paid for and to limit your liability.
- Don't reopen e-mail from unknown sources, and use virus detection software.
- Protect your PINs and passwords, change them often and use a combination of letters and numbers.
If you become a victim of identity theft:
- File a police report.
- Notify all of those whom you have a financial relationship.
- Notify credit bureau fraud units, place a fraud alert statement on you credit report and request bi-monthly copies of your credit report until your case is resolved (free to fraud victims).
- Establish a password for telephone inquiries on bank and credit card accounts.
- Check post office for unauthorized change of address requests.
- Report check theft to check verification companies.
- Follow up contacts with letters and keep copies of all correspondence.
